First practical session in the NanoSaint-Etienne platform at UJM
The master 2 PSRS students present at UJM inaugurated the first practical session carried out on the NanoSaint-Etienne platform yesterday. They worked in a clean room under an inactinic light to clean a sample, deposit a thin layer of photosensitive resist by spin coating, use an interferometric setup to illuminate the sample, develop the resist and get a surface grating, which they characterized with an atomic force microscope.

Benjamin Gallinet, invited lecturer at UJM
We were delighted to welcome and interact with Dr. Benjamin Gallinet this week. Benjamin got a PhD at EPFL and has now more than 10 years of experience at CSEM in Switzerland, where he is presently R&D manager. He has given a 4h lecture at UJM about applications in nanophotonics and plasmonics. The Master 2 students have enjoyed his wide experience from theoretical approaches to products and have discovered many very recent industrial applications in these fields.

Applications of Photonics – lecture series
UEF’s popular Photonics Master of Science -program’s course Applications of Photonics will be held this year as a series of hybrid lectures hosted by Professor Jyrki Saarinen in UEF’s Joensuu campus and online in Microsoft Teams. The course is organized in collaboration with PREIN flagship and Photonics Finland.
Applications of Photonics -lectures focus on practical applications of photonics from an industrial point of view. Key professionals from various companies give presentations regarding their businesses, technologies & applications in 30-minute lectures, and participants can discuss the themes further in the following 15-minute Q&A sessions. A total of 22 companies are invited, each from a distinct sub field of photonics. The lectures are also included in the Month of Photonics, PSRS Industrial Days and IMLEX Days.

GRADUATE INTERDISCIPLINARY SESSION #5 of the MANUTECH SLEIGHT GRADUATE SCHOOL
On January 11-12, 2021, the PSRS students attend the Graduate Interdisciplinary Session devoted to Graduate School-wide interactions. It offers courses of potential interest to all its members: scientists, engineers, and students active in its various domains, both in research laboratories and in academic courses. Master students are most welcome to use the opportunity and merge for a few days with the research community.
The programme includes scientific lectures and conferences by international class experts, who have accepted to address the wide and diverse audience. In addition, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows are invited to give short presentations on some recent research result, and master students are offered a time to “pitch” on their academic projects in the MANUTECH SLEIGHT area. Each of the three scientific axes of the MANUTECH SLEIGHT Graduate School organize a half-day workshop devoted to research projects in progress and prospective discussions.

Testimony: Huynh Duc LE, student of the first cohort 2020-2022

First of all, I would like to thank the coordinators for giving me such a great opportunity to be a part of the PSRS program. Speaking for myself, my full name is Huynh Duc LE, and from Vietnam. I attained a bachelor of engineering in Engineering Physics at an engineering Vietnamese university and then worked as an optical engineer within a year. This year, I desire to pursue a master’s degree in photonics in order to deepen into the science and technology of light which has changed the world faster, smarter, safer, and more sustainably in the 21st century. I chose the PSRS master program because of its broad spectrum of optics and photonics from basic science and theory to specialization phases. The coursework gives students various directions in which they are able to seek a job in either industry or academia. Furthermore, the PSRS consortium includes good European universities, associated industrial and academic partners having high-quality education, distinguished professors, research facilities, and internship opportunities. I strongly believe that I will broaden and apply my knowledge of photonics as well as soft skills such as interpersonal skills, multidisciplinary and multicultural teamwork after the 2-year PSRS program in different European countries. I am really looking forward to starting my PSRS journey.
Testimony: Nathalia Della Giustina Ballmann, student of the first cohort 2020-2022

My name is Nathalia, I come from a small town in southern Brazil and I will be part of the first PSRS cohort starting this September.
I have a bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), and I also studied for one year at the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse as part of an exchange program. My main focus during my undergraduate studies were Analog Integrated Circuits. I worked for two years on the research of integrated DC-DC converters and wrote my final studies project on the subject.
By the end of my degree, I started my job in embedded systems development at CERTI Foundation. For the most part of this 3-year period, I was working on FPGA design for avionics, but I also spent a few months developing embedded software.
I decided to pursue further education abroad and my research has led me to the PSRS program. Photonics is something that had me interested in my previous studies but that I did not explore it in more depth. This is a trending topic that has multiple applications yet to be discovered. Given my background in electronics and my interest in semiconductor engineering, I chose the specialization in Micro-nano-technological Devices. Additionally, I found it very interesting that the curriculum has various courses on programming. My professional experience has shown me that these are valuable skills.
I am looking forward to studying and getting to know more of France, Finland and Italy. I hope we can get the most out of this great opportunity.
Origin of students of the first cohort
