Deborah Amos Adigun (Alumna 2025) was invited as a speaker to participate in the webinar “Africa in the Light Era: Careers, Innovation, and Technology in Optics/Photonics”!
Organised by Photonics Nigeria, the event celebrates UNESCO International Day of Light.
Deborah is an OPTICA Amplify Scholar and won a MasterCard Foundation Scholarship. During this event, she shared insights on the topic: “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬/𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝”.
Participants explored opportunities in the field of optics/photonics and discussed how light-based technologies are shaping the future of chip production, AI infrastructure, broadband access and empowering the next generation of innovation across the world.

PATHS TO PHOTONICS 🌟
Episode 1 — Deborah Amos Adigun (Alumna 2025)
She once dreamed of becoming a doctor.
Today, Deborah is a doctoral student at UEF, shaping the future of photonics, research, and innovation!
Behind every brilliant student, there is also an opportunity that made the journey possible.
At iPSRS, we work closely with universities, laboratories, companies, and innovation partners across Europe to create meaningful opportunities for our students:

We’re proud to celebrate one of our 2025 graduates Peter Samaha on the publication of his very first research paper as main author 👏
”Tuning and characterization remain major bottlenecks for scaling silicon-based quantum computers. To address this, we developed a method for automatic charge-state tuning on 300 mm FDSOI quantum dots.
We use neural-network semantic segmentation to detect transition lines in full charge stability diagrams. This allows us to systematically guide the device toward the single-electron regime without relying on manual calibration.”

Congratulations to Muhammad Muaz IQBAL, our PSRS 2nd Cohort Alumni, who received the “Best Master Award in Optics for 2023” at University of Eastern Finland for his work : “Graphene enhanced dielectric metasurface: towards close to perfect absorption, designed, manufactured and characterised a graphene-like film enhanced with a 3D-printed dielectric metasurface. The main goal was to achieve near-perfect absorption at various angles of light incidence..

Congratulations as well to Onah Ebere , our PSRS 2nd Cohort Alumni, who received the “Best Master Award in Optics for 2023” at University of Eastern Finland for her work :Hybrid Active Polymer Nano-Waveguide, focused on designing and manufacturing a waveguide containing active material enabling excitation and collection.
The award is funded by a donation from Huawei Technologies (Finland). The award is presented in recognition of a notable Master’s thesis in the field of photonics, one that has made significant use of, or a significant contribution to, photonics.
